  1. TITLE: 5204 QUICKWRITER PRINTER ..........................1004
  2.   The IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer is a multimode 24-wire matrix
  3.   impact printer, designed for attachment to IBM Personal
  4.   Computers, IBM Personal Systems, IBM Displays and IBM Systems
  5.   with parallel and serial interfaces and compatible non-IBM systems.
  6.   The IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer features impact letter quality
  7.   printing using film or fabric ribbon and fonts designed for true
  8.   letter quality. Eight resident fonts and optional pluggable font
  9.   cartridges, each containing up to 4 styles, allows up to 12 fonts
  10.   on-line. The printer supports 5 pitches and 3 print modes, Draft,
  11.   Letter Quality and Selectric(R) Font. The IBM Quickwriter(TM)
  12.   Printer with the 5204 Film Ribbon and optional Selectric(R) Font
  13.   provides print quality that is as acceptable as that produced by
  14.   an IBM Selectric(R) III Typewriter.  This flexibility will provide
  15.   users requiring impact printing with solutions to their word
  16.   processing, spreadsheet, APA graphics and carbon copy needs.
  17.   The new Dual Drawer Sheetfeed supports the IBM Quickwriter(TM)
  18.   Printer and the IBM Quietwriter(R) III Printer. TheIBM
  19.   Quietwriter(R) III Printer Dual Drawer Sheetfeed is not supported
  20.   by the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer and should not be used on the IBM
  21.   Quickwriter(TM) Printer.   The existing Envelope Feed supports
  22.   Envelope Feed will provide the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer with
  23.   the unique advantage on a 24-wire printer of printing a document
  24.   consisting of two different paper types and an envelope as one collated
  25.   job, without manual intervention.
  26.   The new Adjustable Single Bin Sheetfeed, supports both the
  27.   IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer and IBM Quietwriter(R) III Printer. The
  28.   Adjustable Single Bin Sheetfeed handles a variety of paper widths,
  29.   offers collated output and requires no adapter to be used with either
  30.   the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer or IBM Quietwriter(R) III Printer.
  31.   The new Pinwheel Forms Feeder supports the IBM Quickwriter(TM)
  32.   Printer.  This new bidirectional Pinwheel Forms Feeder will handle
  33.   multipart paper on the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer. The IBM
  34.   Quietwriter(R) III Printer Pinwheel Forms Feed, is not supported
  35.   on the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer.
  36.   In 10 pitch, the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer will operate at speeds
  37.   of 330 cps in Draft mode, 110 cps in Letter Quality mode and 55 cps
  38.   with the optional Selectric(R) Font.

  78.       Under some environmental conditions 16 lb or less, paper may not
  79.       feed correctly. The paper may wrinkle (treeing) as it is driven by
  80.       the feed rolls and platen.  It is recommended that a user test their
  81.       particular brand of 16 lb or less paper to verify adequate print
  82.       quality.
  83.   o   CONTINUOUS FORMS
  84.       It is not recommended to use continuous paper without the Pinwheel
  85.       Forms feed feature.  Both edges of the pinfeed forms must be threaded
  86.       Mulipart forms must be securely bound together.  Users should test
  87.       their multipart forms for satisfactory results
  88.   o   SINGLE SHEETFEED
  89.       Single sheet feeding is by manual insertion, unless an optional cut
  90.       sheetfeed feature is used.
  91.   o   AUTOMATIC CUT SHEETFEED
  92.       Optimum feeding results with cut sheetfeed will be obtained when
  93.       using 20-24 lb. (75-90 gm/sq metre) paper. Some 16 lb.(60 gm/sq
  94.       metre) paper may be used with satisfactory results. Users should
  95.       test 16 lb. paper in their particular environment to assure
  96.       satisfactory operating results.  The Dual Drawer Sheetfeed previously
  97.       announced on the IBM Quietwriter(R) III Printer, feature number
  98.       9538 (US part number 1479538, EMEA part number 4466656) is not
  99.       supported on the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer.  The new Dual Drawer
  100.       Sheetfeed, feature number 8077 (US part number 1058077, EMEA part
  101.       number 1058078) is compatible with both the IBM Quietwriter(R) III
  102.       Printer and IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer.  Under some environmental
  103.       some 24 lb or greater, envelopes may not exit the Adjustable Single
  104.       Bin Sheetfeed properly.  It is recommended that a user test their
  105.       particular brand of 24 lb or greater envelopes.
  106.   o   USAGE CONSIDERATIONS
  107.       Expected average annual usage is 12 million characters. Greater usage
  108.       may require additional service and may increase head wear and require
  109.       printhead replacement.
  110.   o   SELECTRIC(R) FONT
  111.       Ribbon yield on the Film Ribbon will be reduced using the
  112.       Selectric(R) Font mode.
  113.   o   BAR CODE FONT
  114.       Requires Film Ribbon.  Uses Selectric(R) Font mode.  Application
  115.       program is required to optimally use the font.  Due to the
  116.       variability of bar code applications and scanners, IBM advises
  117.       that customers evaluate the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer bar code
  118.       output in their particular application black print on the IBM

  123.   life.  This ribbon gives the best price performance on the IBM
  124.   Quickwriter(TM) Printer.  The 5204 Fabric Ribbon is available

  144.  The IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III Printer 5202.001, is a high speed, executive
  145.  letter quality printer for attachment to IBM Personal Computers, PS/2-
  146.  family and compatible non-IBM PC hosts.  The IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III
  147.  Printer offers the IBM QUIETWRITER(R) Printer Model 2 functions including
  148.  all points addressable (APA) graphics.
  149.  The IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III Printer offers higher speeds, enhanced
  150.  functions and additional paper handling options over the IBM QUIETWRITER(R)
  151.  Printer and the IBM QUIETWRITER(R) Printer Model 2.  Depending on pitch,
  152.  the IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III Printer will print at burst speeds of 100-171
  153.  cps in quality mode, 80-136 cps in enhanced mode, and 160-274 cps in
  154.  draft mode.  Draft mode offers near letter quality printing at draft
  155.  speeds. The enhanced functions include increased font capability.

  230. Limitations
  231.   1.  It is recommended that customers owning Displaywrite 3, Release
  232.       1.0 or 1.1 purchase  the  upgrade to Displaywrite 4 in order to
  233.       facilitate use of the new capabilities of the 5202.  Refer to the
  234.       Program Availability letter dated October 21, 1986, number 286-491
  235.       for ordering details.  This upgrade is offered for a limited time
  236.       and will end on July 31, 1987.
  237.   2.  Enhanced 5250 Emulation Program Version 2.12 Limitations
  238.       Switch 4 of Switch Group 2 (Font Emulation) should be ON in order
  239.       to properly select the pitch.
  240.       Switches 1, 2, and 3 should be set for the appropriate default font
  241.       and pitch.
  242.   3.  DOS 3.3
  243.       For code page switching between code page 437 and 850, a Courier
  244.       850 cartridge, is recommended.  For code page switching between
  245.       code page 437 and 863, a Courier 863 cartridge, is recommended.
  246.       If the typestyle currently active is not available in the
  247.       selected code page, operator intervention will be required. By
  248.       pressing the printer start button. the "best fit" font will be
  249.       selected.
  250.   4.  The Hex Trace Dump is inoperable when the IBM QUIETWRITER III
  251.       Printer is connected to the 3197 Model C or D.
  252.   5.  Continuous Forms
  253.       It is not recommended to use continuous paper without the pin-wheel
  254.       forms feed feature.
  255.       Both edges of the pinfeed forms must be threaded.
  256.       Paper Specifications
  257.       Maximum paper width is 16.54 inches (470mm).  Maximum pin to pin
  258.       width for continuous forms is 14.5 inches (368mm inch).  Maximum
  259.       print-line width is 13.2 inches (335mm).
  260.   6.  Single Sheetfeed:
  261.       Single sheet is by manual insertion, unless the optional automatic
  262.       cut sheet feed feature is used.
  263.   7.  Automatic Cut Sheetfeed:
  264.       Optimum feeding results with the cut sheet feed will be obtained
  265.       when using 20-24 lb. (75-90 gm/sq. metre) paper.  Some 16 lb.
  266.       (60  gm/sq. metre) paper may be used with satisfactory results.
  267.       Users must test 16 lb. (60 gm/sq. metre) paper in their particular
  268.       environment to assure satisfactory operating results.
  269.   8.  Paper Recommendations
  270.       The 5202 prints with a non-impact printing process which works
  271.       best on smooth papers with a maximum roughness of 300 sheffield
  272.       points (less the 9 BEKK second).  Enhanced mode should be used for
  273.       rough papers.  Most  16-20 pound (60-75 GM/SQ. metre) xerographic
  274.       papers meet this requirement. The IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III High Yield
  275.       Printer Ribbon is sensitive to humidity and prints darker in high
  276.       humidity and lighter in low humidity for a fixed setting of the
  277.       print control. It therefore may be necessary to move the print
  278.       control to a lower setting when the indoor humidity is high, and
  279.       to a higher setting when the humidity is low.  Lower temperatures
  280.       require higher settings for a particular setting then higher
  281.       temperatures.  The ribbon is less sensitive to temperature
  282.       variations.
  283.   9.  Transparencies
  284.       The IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III Printer may be used to print directly on
  285.       transparencies.  Print quality and durability depend on the
  286.       transparency used.  Therefore, transparencies should be tested
  287.       for acceptability.  Below are several considerations for printing
  288.       on transparencies.
  289.       o   Transparencies produced for use with infrared copiers generally
  290.           give acceptable results when printing is done on the front or
  291.           non-infrared side. In general the front of the transparency is
  292.           identified by placing the "notch" in the transparency in the
  293.           upper right-hand corner or as recommended by the individual
  294.           manufacturer.
  295.       o   A sheet of xerographic paper should be loaded behind each
  296.           transparency.
  297.       o   Use the Quality print mode.
  298.       o   Information printed on the transparency is not indelible.
  299.   10. Attachment to other than IBM products may require other than the
  300.       IBM PC printer cable.
  301.   11. Usage Considerations - Expected average annual usage is 6 million
  302.       characters.  Care should be exercised in placing the printer in
  303.       usage environments exceeding 12 million characters a year due to
  304.       supply cost considerations.
  305.   12. Head Tilt - The IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III Printer prints business
  306.       graphics, character box by character box.  This may result in
  307.       vertical bars not being exactly aligned.
  308.   13. Minimum dot density is 2x2 when in 240 x 240 dots per inch APA
  309.       graphics mode.

  320.   The 5201-001 QUIETWRITER is a unique, very quiet, letter quality printer
  321.   for attachment to the IBM Personal Computer Family and non-IBM personal
  322.   computers compatible with the IBM Personal Computer parallel interface.
  323.   The IBM "QUIETWRITER" Printer burst prints at 40-60 characters per second
  324.   (CPS), depending on the pitch used; that means the user, when in 15 cpi,
  325.   can print data processing applications at up to 60 cps and high quality
  326.   word processing applications at 40-48 cps, when in 10 or 12 CPI.  The
  327.   IBM "QUIETWRITER" Printer features an optional modular single drawer sheet
  328.   feed and an optional modular pin wheel forms feed.   The user can,

  596.       The IBM QUIETWRITER Printer Model 2 may utilize any one of a
  597.       variety of, 252 character type fonts on any printing operation. It
  598.       is the customers' responsibility to match the type font selected
  599.       to the printing operation. An IBM QUIET(TM) Electronic Font PC is
  600.       recommended for use with this printer. All of the IBM Personal
  601.       Computer or IBM Personal Computer XT system characters are
  602.       available in the following type styles and pitches.

  619.       Single sheetfeed is by manual insertion, unless the optional
  620.       automatic cut sheet feed feature is used.
  621.       Automatic Cut SheetFeed: Optimum feeding results with the cut
  622.       sheet feed will be obtained when using 75-90 gm/sz. metre (20-24
  623.       lbs.) paper. Some 60 gm/sq. metre (16 lbs.) paper may be used with
  624.       satisfactory results. Users must test 60 gm/sq. metre (16 lbs.)
  625.       paper in their particular environment to assure satisfactory
  626.       operating results.
  627.   o   Paper Recommendations
  628.       The 5201 prints with a non-impact printing process which works
  629.       best on smooth papers with a maximum roughness of 300 sheffield
  630.       points (less the 9 BEKK second). Rougher papers should not be
  631.       used. Most 60-75 gm/sq. metre (16-20 lbs.) Xerographic papers meet
  632.       this requirement. A contrast control switch is available for
  633.       customers to change the intensity of the printing to allow for
  634.       changes in the paper, ribbons, or environment (e.g.
  635.       humidity/temperature). See the Guide-To-Operations for additional
  636.       details.

  672.           output when using the IBM QUIETWRITER Printer Model 2 as an

  674.       -   Software graphics applications running on the IBM Graphics
  675.           Printer may be incompatible with the QUIETWRITER Printer Model
  676.           2 due to the difference between the two printers' index
  677.           increment (1/216" on IBM Graphics Printer versus 1/96" on the

  679.       -   A minimum dot pattern of 2 to 4 dots horizontally and 2 to 4
