TITLE: 5204 QUICKWRITER PRINTER ..........................1004
The IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer is a multimode 24-wire matrix
impact printer, designed for attachment to IBM Personal
Computers, IBM Personal Systems, IBM Displays and IBM Systems
with parallel and serial interfaces and compatible non-IBM systems.
The IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer features impact letter quality
printing using film or fabric ribbon and fonts designed for true
letter quality. Eight resident fonts and optional pluggable font
cartridges, each containing up to 4 styles, allows up to 12 fonts
on-line. The printer supports 5 pitches and 3 print modes, Draft,
Letter Quality and Selectric(R) Font. The IBM Quickwriter(TM)
Printer with the 5204 Film Ribbon and optional Selectric(R) Font
provides print quality that is as acceptable as that produced by
an IBM Selectric(R) III Typewriter. This flexibility will provide
users requiring impact printing with solutions to their word
processing, spreadsheet, APA graphics and carbon copy needs.
The new Dual Drawer Sheetfeed supports the IBM Quickwriter(TM)
Printer and the IBM Quietwriter(R) III Printer. TheIBM
Quietwriter(R) III Printer Dual Drawer Sheetfeed is not supported
by the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer and should not be used on the IBM
Quickwriter(TM) Printer. The existing Envelope Feed supports
Envelope Feed will provide the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer with
the unique advantage on a 24-wire printer of printing a document
consisting of two different paper types and an envelope as one collated
job, without manual intervention.
The new Adjustable Single Bin Sheetfeed, supports both the
IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer and IBM Quietwriter(R) III Printer. The
Adjustable Single Bin Sheetfeed handles a variety of paper widths,
offers collated output and requires no adapter to be used with either
the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer or IBM Quietwriter(R) III Printer.
The new Pinwheel Forms Feeder supports the IBM Quickwriter(TM)
Printer. This new bidirectional Pinwheel Forms Feeder will handle
multipart paper on the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer. The IBM
Quietwriter(R) III Printer Pinwheel Forms Feed, is not supported
on the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer.
In 10 pitch, the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer will operate at speeds
of 330 cps in Draft mode, 110 cps in Letter Quality mode and 55 cps
with the optional Selectric(R) Font.

o 5204 FILM RIBBON
Recommended for IBM Selectric(R) Font and letter quality printing.
Use IBM 5204 Fabric Ribbon, for draft printing.
o PAPER WEIGHT
Under some environmental conditions 16 lb or less, paper may not
feed correctly. The paper may wrinkle (treeing) as it is driven by
the feed rolls and platen. It is recommended that a user test their
particular brand of 16 lb or less paper to verify adequate print
quality.
o CONTINUOUS FORMS
It is not recommended to use continuous paper without the Pinwheel
Forms feed feature. Both edges of the pinfeed forms must be threaded
Mulipart forms must be securely bound together. Users should test
their multipart forms for satisfactory results
o SINGLE SHEETFEED
Single sheet feeding is by manual insertion, unless an optional cut
sheetfeed feature is used.
o AUTOMATIC CUT SHEETFEED
Optimum feeding results with cut sheetfeed will be obtained when
using 20-24 lb. (75-90 gm/sq metre) paper. Some 16 lb.(60 gm/sq
metre) paper may be used with satisfactory results. Users should
test 16 lb. paper in their particular environment to assure
satisfactory operating results. The Dual Drawer Sheetfeed previously
announced on the IBM Quietwriter(R) III Printer, feature number
9538 (US part number 1479538, EMEA part number 4466656) is not

Sheetfeed, feature number 8077 (US part number 1058077, EMEA part
number 1058078) is compatible with both the IBM Quietwriter(R) III
Printer and IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer. Under some environmental
some 24 lb or greater, envelopes may not exit the Adjustable Single
Bin Sheetfeed properly. It is recommended that a user test their
particular brand of 24 lb or greater envelopes.
o USAGE CONSIDERATIONS
Expected average annual usage is 12 million characters. Greater usage
may require additional service and may increase head wear and require
printhead replacement.
o SELECTRIC(R) FONT
Ribbon yield on the Film Ribbon will be reduced using the
Selectric(R) Font mode.
o BAR CODE FONT
Requires Film Ribbon. Uses Selectric(R) Font mode. Application
program is required to optimally use the font. Due to the
variability of bar code applications and scanners, IBM advises
that customers evaluate the IBM Quickwriter(TM) Printer bar code

Limitations
1. It is recommended that customers owning Displaywrite 3, Release
1.0 or 1.1 purchase the upgrade to Displaywrite 4 in order to
facilitate use of the new capabilities of the 5202. Refer to the
Program Availability letter dated October 21, 1986, number 286-491
for ordering details. This upgrade is offered for a limited time
and will end on July 31, 1987.
2. Enhanced 5250 Emulation Program Version 2.12 Limitations
Switch 4 of Switch Group 2 (Font Emulation) should be ON in order
to properly select the pitch.
Switches 1, 2, and 3 should be set for the appropriate default font
and pitch.
3. DOS 3.3
For code page switching between code page 437 and 850, a Courier
850 cartridge, is recommended. For code page switching between
code page 437 and 863, a Courier 863 cartridge, is recommended.
If the typestyle currently active is not available in the
selected code page, operator intervention will be required. By
pressing the printer start button. the "best fit" font will be
selected.
4. The Hex Trace Dump is inoperable when the IBM QUIETWRITER III
Printer is connected to the 3197 Model C or D.
5. Continuous Forms
It is not recommended to use continuous paper without the pin-wheel
forms feed feature.
Both edges of the pinfeed forms must be threaded.
Paper Specifications
Maximum paper width is 16.54 inches (470mm). Maximum pin to pin
width for continuous forms is 14.5 inches (368mm inch). Maximum
print-line width is 13.2 inches (335mm).
6. Single Sheetfeed:
Single sheet is by manual insertion, unless the optional automatic
cut sheet feed feature is used.
7. Automatic Cut Sheetfeed:
Optimum feeding results with the cut sheet feed will be obtained
when using 20-24 lb. (75-90 gm/sq. metre) paper. Some 16 lb.
(60 gm/sq. metre) paper may be used with satisfactory results.
Users must test 16 lb. (60 gm/sq. metre) paper in their particular
environment to assure satisfactory operating results.
8. Paper Recommendations
The 5202 prints with a non-impact printing process which works
best on smooth papers with a maximum roughness of 300 sheffield
points (less the 9 BEKK second). Enhanced mode should be used for
rough papers. Most 16-20 pound (60-75 GM/SQ. metre) xerographic
papers meet this requirement. The IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III High Yield
Printer Ribbon is sensitive to humidity and prints darker in high
humidity and lighter in low humidity for a fixed setting of the
print control. It therefore may be necessary to move the print
control to a lower setting when the indoor humidity is high, and
to a higher setting when the humidity is low. Lower temperatures
require higher settings for a particular setting then higher
temperatures. The ribbon is less sensitive to temperature
variations.
9. Transparencies
The IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III Printer may be used to print directly on
transparencies. Print quality and durability depend on the
transparency used. Therefore, transparencies should be tested
for acceptability. Below are several considerations for printing
on transparencies.
o Transparencies produced for use with infrared copiers generally
give acceptable results when printing is done on the front or
non-infrared side. In general the front of the transparency is
identified by placing the "notch" in the transparency in the
upper right-hand corner or as recommended by the individual
manufacturer.
o A sheet of xerographic paper should be loaded behind each
transparency.
o Use the Quality print mode.
o Information printed on the transparency is not indelible.
10. Attachment to other than IBM products may require other than the
IBM PC printer cable.
11. Usage Considerations - Expected average annual usage is 6 million
characters. Care should be exercised in placing the printer in
usage environments exceeding 12 million characters a year due to
supply cost considerations.
12. Head Tilt - The IBM QUIETWRITER(R) III Printer prints business
graphics, character box by character box. This may result in
vertical bars not being exactly aligned.
13. Minimum dot density is 2x2 when in 240 x 240 dots per inch APA
graphics mode.

IBM QUIET(TM) NON-CORRECTING RIBBON - P/N 1299642, is not
recommended for this application.)
- APA graphics print quality
An IBM QUIET Electronic Font PC is recommended for use with this
printer. All of the IBM Personal Computer system characters are
available with the following type fonts.
o Prestige 15
o Tile
o Boldface
o Prestige Pica
o Courier 15
o Courier 10
o Letter Gothic
o Prestige Elite
o Courier 12
In addition, fonts for the QUIETWRITER(R) 7 typewriter may be used.
However, they are limited to the basic typewriter keyboard character set.
Limitations/Considerations
o Type Fonts:
The IBM QUIETWRITER Printer Model 2 may utilize any one of a
variety of, 252 character type fonts on any printing operation. It
is the customers' responsibility to match the type font selected
to the printing operation. An IBM QUIET(TM) Electronic Font PC is
recommended for use with this printer. All of the IBM Personal
Computer or IBM Personal Computer XT system characters are
available in the following type styles and pitches.
- Prestige 15
- Boldface
- Title
- Courier 10
- Prestige Elite
- Prestige Pica
- Letter Gothic
- Courier 12
- Courier 15
o Continuous Forms:
It is not recommended to use continuous paper without the
pin-wheel forms feed feature. Both edges of the pinfeed forms must
be threaded. Paper Specifications: Maximum paper width is 381mm
(15 inch). Maximum pin to pin width for continuous forms is 368mm
(14.5 inches). Maximum print-line width is 335mm (13.2 inches).
o Single Sheetfeed:
Single sheetfeed is by manual insertion, unless the optional
automatic cut sheet feed feature is used.
Automatic Cut SheetFeed: Optimum feeding results with the cut
sheet feed will be obtained when using 75-90 gm/sz. metre (20-24
lbs.) paper. Some 60 gm/sq. metre (16 lbs.) paper may be used with
satisfactory results. Users must test 60 gm/sq. metre (16 lbs.)
paper in their particular environment to assure satisfactory
operating results.
o Paper Recommendations
The 5201 prints with a non-impact printing process which works
best on smooth papers with a maximum roughness of 300 sheffield
points (less the 9 BEKK second). Rougher papers should not be
used. Most 60-75 gm/sq. metre (16-20 lbs.) Xerographic papers meet
this requirement. A contrast control switch is available for
customers to change the intensity of the printing to allow for
changes in the paper, ribbons, or environment (e.g.
humidity/temperature). See the Guide-To-Operations for additional
details.
Listed below are only a few of many recommended papers:
- ARDOR XEROCOPY (Trademark of Nekoosa Papers Inc.)
- CHAMPION BOND (Trademark of Champion International Corporation)
- HAMMERMILL FORE XEROCPY (Trademark of Hammermill Papers Group)
- IBM MULTI-SYSTEM PAPER
- MEAD INFO XEROGRAPHIC
- NEKOOSA BOND (Trademark of Nekoosa Papers Inc.)
- SPRINGHILL BUSINESS PAPER (Trademark of International Paper Co.)
o The IBM QUIETWRITER PRINTERS, with the new IBM QUIET
NON-CORRECTING RIBBON (P/N 1299790), can print directly on
transparencies. Transparency sheets should be manually inserted;
with some transparencies a paper backing may be required for
proper feeding. Print on transparencies may not be indelible.
Customers should test their preferred transparencies for
suitability for their applications. Listed below are a few
recommended transparencies:
- IBM COPY TRANSPARENCY-SHEET P/N 674107
- 3M Copy Economy Transparency Film for Infared Copiers
- hp Overhead Transparency Film
NOTE: The previous IBM QUIET NON-CORRECTING RIBBON P/N 1299642,is
not recommended for this application.
o See the IBM QUIETWRITER Printer Guide to Operations for
limitations on reverse line feed. Reverse index is not recommended
with continuous forms.
o Attachment to other than IBM products may require other than
the IBM PC printer cable
o Attachment to other than IBM products may require other than
the IBM PC printer cable.
o Head Tilt - The IBM QUIETWRITER Printer Model 2 prints PC character
graphic, character box by character box. This may result in
vertical bars not being exactly aligned.
o Considerations with graphics mode:
- Vertical compression of up to 6% will be seen in the graphic
output when using the IBM QUIETWRITER Printer Model 2 as an
IBM Graphics Printer.
- Software graphics applications running on the IBM Graphics
Printer may be incompatible with the QUIETWRITER Printer Model
2 due to the difference between the two printers' index
increment (1/216" on IBM Graphics Printer versus 1/96" on the
Quietwriter)
- A minimum dot pattern of 2 to 4 dots horizontally and 2 to 4
dots vertically may be needed to assure adequate print
definition in certain applications.
- Graphics requires two or three passes which results in using
more ribbon per line than is used for text printing. Certain
APA graphics applications may significantly reduce ribbon
yield.
